President's Message March, 2018 A joyous 2018 to you and your family! I am very exited to start my first year serving as your president along with a great team! Welcome new officers, 1st VP Larry Wood, 2nd VP Steve Flattery, Co-Treasurers Ellie Townsend & John Wade, National Director Doug Matz, Alternate National Director Terri Wade, and Director Sally Roche. I am grateful to Membership Secretary Beth King, Secretary Deb Flattery, Directors Joe Samara, Ed Smith, Terri Wade, Bob King, and Jean Wood for wanting to continue to serve our chapter and show the rest of us the ropes. And, of course, many, many, many thanks to (again) Past President Bob Townsend - I couldn't have accepted this position without his guidance. I am a very lucky lady to be working with such a fantastic team.
There are lots of exciting things happening in our club, our region, and nationally with FMCA. I'd like to start with what happened at Wells last year. Along with plenty of food and laughs, we held a very last minute 50/50 to benefit FMCA members displaced due to Hurricane Harvey. We collected over $500 from the 50/50 and our Charity & Relief Fund contributed as well for a total of $1,050 sent to Joe Wright, FMCA VP of the South Central Area to disperse. Here is Joe's thank you note -
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Dear Yankee Travelers, Your kind and generous donation will go a long way in helping 1 of the 3 families who lost everything in Hurricane Harvey. All monies will go direct to these families without any overhead cost. Chapters like you keep the Family in FMCA. You can follow the donations received at sca-fmca.com. Joe Wright, FMCA Vice President South Central Area.
Our Charity & Relief Fund is monies raised separate from our operating budget to support individuals and causes close to the hearts of Yankee Travelers' members. Requests may be sent to any officer. We also received a thank you note from the American Heart Association for our donation of $2,459 from fundraising and proceeds of last year's Beechridge Motorspeedway Rally.
The biggest news to come out of FMCA in 2017 is the 6,820 to 2,981 yes vote to welcome owners of all types of self-contained, wheeled recreational vehicles with permanently installed cooking, sleeping, and sanitary facilities. What an exciting time to be a FMCA member!
Over and above the 4th of July Tri-Rally, we are working on co-hosting rallies this year with our sister chapters, Cape Codders - La Rose Pond in August - and Northeastern - still in the works.
Here's some highlights for the first couple of gatherings of the season. Rally sheets will be available in future newsletters. FMCA's 97th International Convention & RV ExpoMarch 15-18 is at the GA National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry GA. If you haven't registered yet, there is still time! I've been told that Annmarie & Joe Samara, Deb & Steve Flattery, Barbara & Ed Smith, Donna & Mike Matz, and I'm sure many more, are heading to Perry, so if you'd like to meet up to enter and park together, feel free to reach out to them to set it up.
Nelson's Family CampgroundMay 4-6 in Easthampton CT is a new location for us and our first rally of the season. I am looking forward to this new adventure as well as the area attractions that include The Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park, Gillette Castle State Park, Priam Vineyards, Williamantic Brewing Company, Sleeping Giant State Park, Ocean Beach Park, Kidcity Children's Museum, Arrigoni Winery, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Fascia's Chocolates, as well as the campgrounds amenities - fishing & swimming pond, swimming pool, recreation hall & arcade, horseshoes, miniature golf, volleyball, basketball, soccer, shuffleboard and a playground. Also, Nelson's is celebrating Cinco de Mayo that weekend with bingo, piñatas, dancing and more. We could use another host, so if you're looking to get more involved, this is a great opportunity to help out. A great weekend to bring the little ones!
Charlie Brown CampgroundJune 15-17 in Eastford CT is again the location for our Father's Day weekend rally and our first Chapter Meeting of the year. Our traditional boat races and LRC by the fire will be happening this weekend, but we're changing up the menu - delicious Portuguese-style home cooked meals. You don't want to miss this weekend!
SAFETY ALERT: This news broke in November, but still a good reminder now that we're starting to think about getting back in those motorhomes. Fire extinguisher manufacturer Kidde is recalling over 40 million extinguishers in the US and Canada due to problems with the plastic handles. The recall covers 134 models manufactured between 1/1/73 and 8/15/17. It also includes models that were previously recalled in 2009 and 2015. Click the above link for more information including model numbers affected.
